The Abisko VR Live Sky Dome View – An Immersive 360° Northern Lights Experience

Abisko VR Live Sky Dome View

Experience the Arctic sky in every direction. This interactive 360° webcam shows the sky above Abisko in northern Sweden, a place known for its clear nights and mesmerizing northern lights. The live AllSky camera captures the entire horizon and lets you explore the landscape and clouds in real time as if you were standing under the stars yourself.

What You Are Seeing
The default view faces north. The zenith is at the top of the sphere, and if you rotate the view 180° you will be looking south. East lies to your right from the default view and west to your left. During the day you can watch shifting Arctic weather from glowing sun halos to fast moving snow clouds. At night the same camera reveals auroras, stars and the faint light of the Milky Way. Tilt your phone or drag the image with your mouse to look anywhere from the horizon to straight up.

How to Use the 360° Viewer

• Click and drag the image or swipe on mobile to look around.

• Pinch to zoom or scroll your mouse wheel to get closer.

• Tap the VR headset icon in the corner to enter Virtual Reality mode if you are using a headset or compatible smartphone viewer.

• For the best experience switch to full screen and explore under low light when the aurora borealis is active.

• Rotate 180° to face south or small angles to look east and west. Use the recenter button to return to the default north view.

The view updates regularly throughout the night so you can always check current sky conditions in Abisko whether you are planning an aurora chase or simply dreaming of the Arctic.

Why This View Matters
Abisko is one of the most reliable places on Earth to see the northern lights because of its dry microclimate and minimal light pollution. The VR webcam gives travelers, scientists and enthusiasts everywhere a way to observe the real sky live without relying on forecasts or social media posts. This project is part of my effort to share the beauty of Lapland and make aurora watching accessible to everyone. The same camera feeds into my aurora detection system which automatically identifies green light in the sky and estimates auroral strength. You can find that data on the Abisko AllSky Webcam page.

What You Can Use It For
• Aurora planning – check if the northern lights are visible before heading out.

• Weather monitoring – see cloud movements and moonlight conditions in real time.

• Photography scouting – study how light and clouds behave over the mountains to plan your shots.

• Education and inspiration – show students or friends what the Arctic night sky looks like live in full 360°.

Bringing Abisko Closer
Whether you are thousands of kilometers away or staying nearby, this VR Sky Dome connects you directly to the living sky of the north. Every color shift, every cloud and every ribbon of aurora you see here is real and current, not a replay or simulation. Lean back, explore the heavens and let Abisko’s northern lights fill your screen and your imagination.
